Phieng Ngam Handicraft Center
Luang Namtha’s ethnic Tai groups are famous for their weaving of cotton and silk clothes. You can learn how to weave with Tai Daeng and Tai Kao weavers in Phiengnam Village in the Luang Namtha Valley. Classes are offered at the Ban Phieng Ngam weaving Centre, contact an agent or the Visitor Information Centre to book.
Learning to Weave
Following the map of cycling route in Luang Namtha to discover this Handicraft Center, located at Phieng Ngam Village. At the Handicrafts Center, you will see the Tai Deng women are weaving their products in the weaving room even when walking around the village you will see the Tai Deng women also produce their handicrafts at their home in their weaving loom. Visitors can learn the basic of weaving from local people who is the professional on their duty as cotton & silk weaving, also to see cotton color dyeing from natural material. If need the full course for weaving, cotton color dyeing, cooking local food, this program can book from travel agencies and tour companies in Luang Namtha town.
Overnight with nice Ecolodge
At Phieng Ngam Handicrafts Center, there are two eco-lodge for visitors stay overnight, the price will include meal for your dinner and lunch. During your time staying at your accommodation, the guests can learn the Tai Deng Culture via the host family alike cooking Lao food, dressing traditional clothes, speak Lao language. In addition, if need to walk around the villagers in the village please inform your host family to let you go, you definitely will find out the local people have their own weaving loom for producing their own handicrafts for selling to the handicrafts center or to the market. The basket making by local old men, and producing the knives is also available to see.
