Nalae Mountain Adventure
Be among the first to scour the mountains around Nalae on a trek to caves and waterfalls, a cycling tour to a home-stay, or a kayaking expedition down the namtha. In 2012, the Nalae Tourism Office and Eco-Guide Unit began putting a range of tourism activities in place to strengthen its menu, while adding luster to the province’s already impressive adventure line-up. You can go on a guided trek to caves hidden in the jungle near Ban Pha Hu and Ban Pherng, follow a trail to a waterfall on Nam Nuang Stream, or hike on a path to Ban Vard on the Nam Tha. For Multi-day treks in the Provincial Protected Area overnight in a mountain shelter or village home-stay with a Khmu, Tai Lue, or Lamet family as your host.
Try cycling on a challenging climb through a landscape of limestone mountain outcrops on the compact dirt road heading to Vieng Phoukha. An easier trail follows the winding river, with plenty of ethnic communities and a few Buddhist temples to visit between the handicraft-making, home-stay villages of Ban Nong Kham and Ban Had Nalaeng. These village visits present an excellent opportunity to culturally connect with local people and learn about their everyday activities such as pounding rice, gathering forest products for eating or making handicrafts, cooking, weaving, and crafting rattan baskets.
The Tourism Office has also begun offering kayaking tours on the Nam Tha, that paddle along stretches of calm waters and battles rapids with nothing but mountains overlooking your adventure in solitude.
